The Beautiful People-BeatFaceHoney aka Tatiana

Tatiana aka BeatFaceHoney

1.For those out there who don't know you tell us a little bit about BeatFaceHoney
My name is Tatiana Ward. I'm 29 years old an I grew up in Hatfield PA. I currently live in Philadelphia PA. My first love is music and makeup has always run a very close second. I'm a Virgo  I have a cat named Loretta Lynn and I have the most wonderful support system a girl could wish for. I was a singer for the better part of my life but came to realize that I'm not that good at it! lol! So I decided that makeup was the only other thing I could do to make sure I was not just collecting a check but feeling fulfilled.  I work as a professional makeup artist and I make videos on youtube teaching girls around the world how to put on makeup.

2.Are you self taught or did you attend school?
I'm self taught

3.Do you have any tips for girls/guys out there who want to become makeup artist?
I'm a firm believer in failing:) I did a whole lot of failing when I started doing makeup. Through my failures I was able to get better. Don't be afraid to mess up. Every chance you can, work on different faces. This is the best way to learn. You can watch my videos all day long but its entirely different when you're actually holding that brush in your hand and using it on a face that is not your own. Fail and learn. Study magazines and other makeup artists. When I was learning, I was POSSESSED by the makeup God's. I read as much as I could and harassed as many friends as I could to let me practice. I worked at MAC for about 6 months. That was a GREAT experience. I got to work on all different kinds of races and skin types and eye shapes and face shapes.

4.Do you think You tube helped you with your makeup skills or was it about teaching others?
I've always been a natural born teacher. I enjoy explaining things. I worked in retail for years while pursuing my singing career. If someone needed to be trained, it was always me who did it. I enjoy guiding and encouraging people. Naturally, when I realized that there was a platform that people where using to teach makeup, I was all over it! Youtube DEFINITELY helped with my technique. You know how people talk about their children and how they are supposed to be teaching them, but in the end THEY are the ones learning lessons? Thats how I feel about my audience. I learned when making my first video that I had to put things into words that I never had. That meant I had to find the worlds and be able to give reason behind it. I often times would find myself questioning why I did something in a particular way. If I couldn't explain it to my audience, perhaps its because Im doing it wrong and there is a better way.

5.Something amazing happened to you recently, you got to do Brandy's makeup, how did that come to be?
Brandy is one of my idols:) She's got one of the most amazing voices that our generation can claim. I made a tutorial duplicating her makeup from the "Put It Down" video. My viewers tweeted her and told her about me. She contacted me via twitter and said she loved the video and my makeup. The rest is history:) She did a show in Philly and asked that I do her makeup. Truly a dream come true!

6.Who else would you like to work with?Any other celebrity you would love to work with?
I want to work with SOOOO many artists! I think of myself as a singer who does makeup. Most of my idols and the women I admire are vocalists. I cant wait to do Beyonce, Janelle Monae, Cher, Janet Jackson, Solange, Pink,  I could seriously go ON AND ON! This industry will allow me to be around so many people I've looked up to for so many years. I also look forward to being around greatness like Oprah and Michelle Obama. Brandy was truly an unbelievable experience. She was in my top 5 and it actually happened!

7.When did you know you wanted to be a makeup artist?
I struggle with this question at times. I think that MOST women teach themselves makeup because we have insecurities. As a teenager, I saw Kevyn Aucoin do an interview on tv. I was probably about 14 or 15. I had no idea that you change peoples faces, make their noses look slimmer, make their cheek bones pop, just with makeup! I never felt pretty as a kid so I bought his book and STUDIED IT! I looked at those transformations he did and I was hell bent on doing that for myself. I wanted to feel beautiful. I developed a love for the actual application  Id relish in taking an hour to do just my makeup alone. It was my favorite part of my day. I knew then that if music didn't work out, I'd be doing makeup.

8.What items do you suggest every makeup artist have in their kit? Your top 5 items for your kit?
Foundation, Concealer, Blush, Gloss, Brow pencils. Don't concern yourself with the brands. You'll work your way up to that. These are the basics. Notice I didn't include eyeshadow. Only on youtube and on instagram do people really care about eyeshadow. Of course its important, but when you are just learning, the most important thing to learn is FACE makeup. It doesn't matter how awesome the color combination is on her eyelid if her skin looks ashy and her eyebrows are lopsided!

9.What is your personal, holy grail beauty item/s?
I watch people do reviews on makeup all the time. They speak about products that they cant live without. My kit is constantly growing and Im always trying to incorporate new things into it. My fav items change all the time. I evolve as an artist everyday. A couple of things that have stayed consistent are Wet N' Wild's cream liner, MAC Studio Fix powder, MAC Studio Tech Foundation and MAC Studio Finish concealers. Ask me next week, and I might tell you something different. lol

10.In your You Tube videos you come across very positive and confident. Have you always been that way? Especially when you stated doing makeup on clients? Any tips on finding thing confidence within ourselves?
Ya gotta fake it till you make it! I trained one of my best friends on how to do makeup. I told her that NO MATTER WHAT, you play it cool. If you are freaking out in your head and you don't know how you're gonna get through a face because you messed up their eyeliner or you cant get their eyebrows right or for whatever reason, don't loose your cool! If you freak out, the client will freak out even worse. Also, I think that people have this idea in their heads that the client isn't supposed to see themselves to the very end of the transformation. Everyone likes the element of surprise.... NOT ME! Have a mirror with you at all times and have your client check her face every so often. This way, she can tell you what she doesn't like, or what she'd like changed before its too late. I cant say it enough, YOU ARE GOING TO FAIL! You will learn from it though. I remember doing trial makeup on a bride and she didn't say she hated it, but I knew she hated it. I left there not being discouraged, but feeling determined to never have that happen again. You will gain confidence with every triumph, but be willing to except your failures and learn from them.

11.What music do you listen to when you are getting ready? Anyone that inspires you when doing makeup?
Music inspires me all together! At the moment I've been listening to a lot of Brandy but it could be ANYTHING! From Steely Dan to 2 Chainz, I LOVE MUSIC! Its the biggest inspiration in my life.

12. So what can we expect to see from BeatFaceHoney in the near future?
Im hoping to start doing classes this summer. I really want to TEACH makeup in a hands-on kind of way and also meet my audience and get to tell them to their faces how much I appreciate them. I also see myself in LA a lot in the coming months. I hope to be beating faces from coast to coast:)

13.Where would you like to see yourself this time next year?
God has been so good to me that I just don't even know whats coming next! One of my favorite sayings is , "Man plans and God Laughs". I could tell you that I hope to be on tour with Beyonce and make it home in enough time to open up my own makeup teaching facility,  but God may have even bigger plans for me! I know that I hope to be doing a lot more celebrities and be a trusted and valued part of peoples lives. Thats all I can hope for.
