Fashion Designer – Manish Malhotra

Whenever we talk about the pioneers of fashion designing, the name of a maestro strikes our minds, and he is none other than, Manish Malhotra. If we call him a ONE MAN SHOW, it won’t be wrong. He was the first one who introduced the trend of Resort wears in the Hindustani Version, in the form of sarees, kurtis, chiffon kurtas, anarkalis and jodhpuri pants as well.

Early Stage

Since teenage, he was fond of fashion designing and had a passion to become one of the finest fashion designers in the world, and he did it. He began his fashion designing career with small modeling assignments while studying in college, and finally started his fashion designing career as a “pro” by joining a boutique in Bandra, named Equinox.

Break Through

Fashion designer Manish Malhotra got a break-through in Bollywood, through the good offices of David Dhavan. He was working on his super-hit movie SWARG that time in the early 80s and Manish Malhotra approached him, with a request to work for his movie as a costume designer.
He designed three costumes for Juhi Chawla in that movie.  Within a decade, he earned reputation in the eyes film directors and became one of the most popular fashion designers, who chastised the leading film actresses of that time. He designed outfits for Sri Devi, Juhi Chawla, Raveena Tandon, Karishma Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwariya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, Preity Zinta and Kareena Kapoor.

Turning Pro

It’s been more than three decades that this master of costume designing has been giving “looks” to the characters; his specialty is that he transforms the looks according to the role of the character and need of the script. Manish Malhotra has occasionally clothed Sharukh Khan and Aamir Khan as well.

In 1998, Manish disclosed his mainstream designing into public view by opening his dress-making store named, “Reverie-Manish Malhotra” and soon got a number of clients including socialites; among them were Avanti Birla, Tina Ambani, and Rhea Pillai.

The collections of Manish are free form blings and accessories, therefore are worn without any hesitation. His designs have been seen in themovies like Rangeela, Raja Hindustani, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Dil Wale Dulahniya Ley Jaeynge, Dhadkan, Fanaa, Main Hoon Na, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai and much more bollywood sagas.He dressed Urmila Matondkar in the movie ‘Rangeela’ on which he won a Filmfare Award. He has dresses Kajol in Fanaa, Kareena in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta in the movie Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.

In April 2006, he showcased his designs in Mumbai at the Lakme Fashion Week, where Kajol and Preity Zinta walked for him on the ramp. Manish Malhotra trained Surily Goel, who made her debut at the Lakme Fashion Week 2006.He has won Filmfare awards for Costume Designer in Rangeela and Enthiran, Stylish designer of the year 1999 by at the Elle Style Awards and he has been felicitated by National Institute of Fashion Technology.
